The Test Readiness Review Checklist Nobody Talks About

Everyone checks the obvious items at a TRR — test plan approved, safety review complete, aircraft airworthy.

It's the items nobody checks that delay programs.

Items that should be on every TRR but usually aren't:

Instrumentation checkout complete. Not just installed — calibrated, verified end-to-end, generating valid data. "Sensors are installed" is not "instrumentation is ready."

Test cards reviewed by the executor. If the pilot or operator hasn't read the cards, you'll find the gaps during the test.

Prior test prerequisites satisfied. Build-up sequence complete? Results reviewed? No open items blocking?

Condition window defined with numbers. Not "good weather." Specific wind, temperature, visibility limits with a go/no-go threshold.

These aren't edge cases. They cause the "we're not actually ready" conversation 30 minutes before test start.

Why Standard TRR Checklists Fall Short

Most TRR checklists are built around documentation status: is the test plan approved? Is the safety review signed? Is the airworthiness release current? These are necessary but not sufficient.

A TRR should answer one question: if we start this test right now, will it produce valid, usable data? Documentation status doesn't answer that. Operational readiness does.

The items above bridge the gap between "paperwork complete" and "actually ready to test." They force the team to verify that the test infrastructure, the people, and the conditions are aligned — not just the documents.

How to Use This

Add these items to your existing TRR checklist. They don't replace the standard items — they supplement them. Each item should have an owner responsible for verifying status before the TRR, and a simple pass/fail disposition.

If any item is red, the TRR doesn't pass. Not because the paperwork is wrong — because the test isn't ready. And running a test that isn't ready is how you get retests.
